What is the typical recovery time for surgery to repair an inguinal hernia? We have a 20 pound toddler!

In brief: 24 hrs
In a toddler recovery will be rapid by next day, most of the time will have melting suture at the skin wound , no stitches to be taken off.

In brief: Hernia repair time
If the repair was done laprascopically - generally the recovery time is much shorter - ie 1 -2 weeks.
If it was done the "old fashion" way - generally you are looking at 6-8 weeks. For specifics - discuss your situation with the surgeon who performed the surgery.

In brief: Recovery time varies
Recover time will vary depending on many factors including age, general health of the patient, infection control, smoker or not, blood sugar control, the exact type of procedure, and post-operative and follow up care.
Discuss it with your surgeon and get their opinion as to what they feel is a reasonable recovery time for you.

In brief: Very quickly
One of the joys of pediatric surgery is how fast young kids bounce back from surgery, much faster than adults.
All the pain medicine a toddler will need after inguinal hernia repair is Ibuprofen or acetaminophen. After the first couple of days, he may not need anything. There are no activity restrictions, other than avoiding trauma to the groin, so he can get up and play as soon as he wants to.
