I am a 31 year old male and recently just had blood work done. My WBC was 5.9 out of a range of 4.0 - 10.4 k/cmm. Is this normal? Does it change much?

In brief: WBC information

Wbc 5.9 is quite normal.
White blood cell counts very considerably in a single individual from day to day. White blood cells are the primary mediators of control of infection. But WBC represents the number of different types of cells. These different cells help control the infection, inflammatory reactions, cancer and allergy reactions.

In brief: This is normal

White count fluctuates wildly.
Something as simple as a cold shower can double it.

In brief: Normal

This is a normal WBC value and can fluctuate over time depending on your body status.
For example, if you have a cold or illness/infection the white cell value can change, often increasing. More important is the absolute counts of different white cell families within the total count. You can ask your doctor to review these values with you should there be any concerns.
