In brief: See your MD

First of all- if you feel a lump on the breast- you should go to see your doctor for further evaluation.
Cancer is something that we have to rule out- however other benign condition also can be presented as lump- eg- breast cysts, benign condition that is called fibroadenoma, if you are pregnant/breast feeding- milk cyst can occur, abscess on the breast also can give you painful lump. See your md.

In brief: Usually benign

Majority of the lumps in breast are not cancers.
A "lump" can be a cyst, i.e., a fluid filled sac, fibrodenoma, a benign mass, and fibrotic breast tissue, your concern is understandable, however, it is important to follow your doctor's advice to address this issue.
