Affect. Affect generally pertains to body language conveyed through facial expression, although it is also the root word in the term affe tive disorder, which pertains to mood (emotional) disorders. Inappropriate affect is noyed by a clinician when the facial expression is incongruent with the topic of conversation or the mood conveyed by the person. Example, person experinces grief, yet is smiling.

Affect is primarily related to the facial expressions and gestures of a patient in reference to the described mood, content of speech, thought content and thought process and the situation described by the pt. Affect is considered inappropriate, when the facial expressions, body language and gestures are not congruent or consistant with the above described situations.
