In brief: Thyroid function
It's a hormone from the pituitary (brain) and it tells you whether or not the current thyroid hormone level is normal/acceptable.

Because it is reported on a log scale, it is the most sensitive blood test for thyroid function. Most people feel best when it is the lower part of the 'normal' range. Many of us believe that the best test is how a patient feels and the TSH should be used to ensure that the patient is safe with their treatment.
