In brief: Usually none

About 20% of all adults have pfo.
Most people never have symptoms. Pagtent foramen ovale has been associated with cryptogenic stroke (a stroke thought to come from a small clot passing across the pfo from the right side of the heart to the left), migraine headaches, and decompression illness in scuba divers.

In brief: Usually none

All babies are born with pfo.
It is a normal finding in up to 25% of the adult population. Most people never have symptoms. However, pfo has been associated to stroke, migraine headaches, and decompression illness in scuba divers in some patients. We close pfo's in people who have problems. This can be done as an outpatient through a heart catheterization via a tiny incision in the groin.
