In brief: No.
Hives can be chronic which means that they have lasted for more than 6 weeks.
They may last for several months, but almost always resolve eventually. However, they may return at a later time.

In brief: Depends
There are some patients who have hives that last greater than 3 months and for years.
There are some patients that can have recurrent courses of hives through adulthood. Although we may not be able to stop the hives, there are excellent antihistamines that can help control the symptoms and improve quality of life. An allergist can prescribe an individual regimen that will decrease symptoms.
