Amniocentesis or chorionic billows sampling can reveal if the fetus is a boy or girl, but this requires a needle placed through the womb to get some of the fetal cells and check their sex (x and/or y) chromosomes.
Ultrasound is far easier.

But amniocentesis is more invasive and hazardous than U/S - why not U/S??
