In brief: Sleep hygiene
Well it truly depends on the nature of your sleep problems.
The most simple advice would be to follow proper sleep hygiene but if there are other issues such as difficulty staying asleep, early morning awakening, snoring, etc then you should see a sleep physician.

try one of the apps on this site for binaural listening. They are based on neurofeedback and are free and cheap and very helpful in promoting sleep. I have used them and they do work.

Keeping the time and place of sleep fixed, avoiding reading, watching TV, telephone talk in bed. Try to take care of loose ends before bed time. Making the bed and bed room comfortable, avoiding caffine, nicotine and other stimulant, diuretic before bed time.
