In brief: Yes

Obesity is a risk factor for hiatal hernia and you can avoid this by loosing weight.

In brief: Probably

Weight loss will reduce intra-abdominal pressure, which could lessen the chance of developing a hiatal hernia.
Having said that, there are many who develop a hiatal hernia that are not overweight. The cause is multifactorial, and we do not fully understand why some get it and others don't. There is probably a genetic component as well. Losing weight however is good for general health anyway.
