In brief: Infection...
There are many etiologies for cough, one of which is acute bronchitis, which is due to an infection of the airways.
Chronic bronchitis is a form of COPD which is usually due to smoking. Cough is a symptom of both of these but the cough does not cause the conditions.

In brief: Cough
The duration of a cough has no direct relation to the development of bronchitis.
The most common causes of a prolonged cough include serial viral illnesses, nasal allergies and sinusitis. In children , bronchitis is almost always due to bronchospasm; if this is repetitive, it is called asthma or reactive airways disease.
