In brief: Sleep

While individuals may do well with more or less sleep on a regular basis, i think most children function optimally with 8-10 hours of sleep.
Sleep deprivation is increasingly being recognized as being capable of causing symptoms suggestive of attention deficit disorder in school aged kids.

In brief: Depends

It would be better to explain the sleep need & let you decide based on local factors.
Any 6th grader is still growing & may be involved in athletics or studying for tests. Each of these functions adds to the sleep requirement of a kid. If you use 9-10 hrs as the base requirement & add based on the extra activities you can decide based on when they need to get up.
