Group b strep (gbs) is a naturally occuring bacteria in the environment.
It can live in the intestines of 20-25% of all individuals and in general does not cause any issues. It can however, cause an infection in the womb (uterus) during pregnancy, particularly during labor. Therefore, a woman who is known to be gbs positive is treated with antibiotics in labor to protect the baby.
