What is a good non-prescription medication for a child with add to take?

ADD kids. If the child is already properly diagnosed and not "mildly" affected...Add can severely affect the child immediately and his life in the future, if not treated properly. There is no time to waste to try otc. No doctor would suggest otc. Any of the parents have add or history of alcohol and drug use? And the elder generations?..
In short, no. There have been a few placebo controlled trials using nonprescription preparations as augmenting agents in combination with psychostimulants, but none for otc meds only.
