What does it mean when my orthodontist says he will have to "help along" my remaining baby tooth?

In brief: Most Likely

He means he is going to take it out so that the permanent tooth can come in faster or if their isn't a permanent tooth it needs to be removed to started on closing the gap.
Its just a friendlier way to say it. No worries though it is very simple.

In brief: Pulled

likely by a referral to a dentist, although some orthodontists will pull teeth as well

In brief: Being polite

Did the orthodontist say this in the presence of your child? It is a sensitive and polite way of saying that removal of a particular baby tooth (or teeth) will make treatment progress more smoothly.
Your child would rather hear it put this way rather than the more "clinical" terms one could use. Kudos to your orthodontist (though he or she should have clarified this with you in private).

In brief: Remove

Over-retained baby teeth can interfere with timing or position of underlying permanent teeth.
If done at the right stage of development, removing baby teeth can enhance eruption of underlying permanent teeth, shortening time in braces. Trust your orthodontist's knowledge of growth and development to make the right decision with you.

In brief: Extraction?

That may be a kind and reassuring way of suggesting the removal of any reticent primary teeth out of the way.
