In brief: NO

We are just learning about risk factors associated with autism spectrum disorders.
Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder with many different factors. Important to discuss with a genetic counselor if there is any family history. Learn more about autism by reading a wonderful book, the thinking person's guide to autism.

In brief: Autism

We have no answers as to why autism is on the rise.
We have no way of determining whether a baby will or will not have autism before birth.

Studies have shown that a family with 1 child is at higher risk for a 2nd child, but there is not much you can change about genetics. A study Swedish study found an association with the number of mercury dentalfillings in the mom & the risk of autism in the child. As there is no 1 cause for autism, there is no 1 thing to avoid. Avoiding toxins in the environment is probably good advice for all.

However all of these studies are small, have not been reproduced in wide populations. Remember risk is an association with the possibility of having a disorder, it does not define causation. Impossible to avoid all environmental toxins unless living in a bubble. Key to minimize toxin exposure- choice for good health in general

In brief: Vitamins

Unfortunately, the cause of autism is still being determined.
There seems to be a link to genetics and vitamin deficiencies. Taking prenatal vitamins before pregnancy and spacing out pregnancies seems to decrease the likelihood, but again, the actually cause or causes is still being worked out.
