Is it really true that an older child still walking on his tip toes is a sign of autism?

In brief: Not necessarly

Walking on tip toes could be due to a brain condition like cerebral palsy, local condition like short achilles' tendon, muscle problem etc.
Best would be to have your child evaluated by an experienced pediatric neurologist.

Although some children with autism toe-walk, many do not, and most toe-walkers probably are not autistic.

In brief: Not Necessarily

Toe walking can be caused by a whole variety of reasons.
Even the birth of a younger sibling can result in an otherwise normal child walking on their toes. But the age of the child and their health status are really important factors that must be considered. You should have the child evaluated by a foot/ankle specialist with an interest in pediatric conditions (podiatrist or foot/ankle ortho).

In brief: Not Enough Info

The diagnosis of autism is fairly easy for child psychiatrists.
And we have a diagnostic bible called the dsm. The criteria to diagnose autism does not include this type of walking. But it is possible it may be due to autism. You need to have an expert in autism evaluate. Further, per bransfield, there are over 50 infections increasing autism rates. Few look into this as a cause.
