In brief: MD vs OD
Ophthalmologists are medical doctors who graduate from medical school.
They are trained in performing surgery on the eye. They complete 4 yrs of training after medical school. They can go on after that and complete 1-2 more years and subspecialize in one area of ophthalmology. Optometrists do NOT go to medical school and can not do surgery on the eye. They do 4 yrs of optom school after college.

In brief: MD or OD?
Ophthalmologists are md's, or medical doctors that have gone to medical school to be physicians and surgeons.
Optometrists go to optometry school and are not physicians or surgeons, but are trained to prescribe glasses and contacts and treat some eye diseases. More information can be found here: http://waeps.Org/node/22.
