What causes yeast infections?

In brief: Candida (overgrowth)

Candida is the usual cause of yeast infections in a person.
Candida is always in or on our bodies, in small amounts that are invisible. Candida lives with us, normally. It causes symptoms if it invades into parts of our bodies where candida is not supposed to go, or it causes symptoms if it is indeed staying where it should but is overgrowing in large amounts (such as with oral or vaginal thrush).
