Post exposure rabies shots (shots following a suspicious bite) used to be more painful and involve more shots.
They still have that reputation, but they are just like any other vaccine now. You do need a series of shots, but it's only 4 shots over several weeks instead of 14 - 30 shots. Here's more info: http://www.Cdc.Gov/rabies/medical_care/.

Rabies shots are similar to typical vaccinations.
There are just more shots involved with a rabies exposure. The rabies IgG (antibodies to neutralize virus) can be injected around the bite site, which means several needle pokes; and then there are several vaccine doses (more needle pokes).
