In brief: A half pack per day

Smoker is at high risk for developing many cancers and cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases.
Many write on this forum about "how long" can I do tis, or "when" will it happen. It is expensive, dumb and risky to smoke, and a half pack is a lot. Stop now, if you can, and you may find it is already not in your control; it in fact controls you and you are a slave to nicotine.

In brief: Varies

The lag time for the development of lung cancer, if one develops, depends on the genetic make up of the individual, other carcinogens to which one may be exposed, nutrition, environmental pollution etc.
It is not a good idea to think that one can quit before cancer develops. Tobacco increase the risk of cancer even after one quits. So the sooner one quits the better.

In brief: Stop smoking now

You dont want to wait until you have cancer and then plan to stop smoking.
Prevention is the best. The best way to prevent yourself or decrease the risk from getting any smoking related cancer- is by -not smoking any cigarette at all. Please stop smoking now. There is a good site where you can check your risk, however- http://nomograms.Mskcc.Org/lung/riskassessment.Aspx.
