Hitting a child only really gives a child the message that there are appropriate times for a person to hit another person - and that is not a message you want to teach your child, as they will experiment as to whether certain situations are the "right ones to hit at".
If mommy can hit someone she loves, then "i can hit my friend". Telling them it's wrong and then leaving them alone will sink in.
