Does a child have to wait till all his baby teeth are out before he gets braces?

In brief: Braces
Although braces are placed on permanent teeth, an orthodontic consult should be done early on.
With a complete treatment plan formulated, necessary extractions or appliances can be planned accordingly. Getting an early start on orthodontic planning, can minimize the time in braces and maximize the outcome.

Although braces are placed on permanent teeth, the size differential between baby and permanent teeth is important to the quality of the final treatment result. DO NOT WAIT until all the permanent teeth fall out. See an Orthodontic Specialist now to discuss the best times to begin treatment.

In brief: Timing of braces
Definitely have an exam to determine when treatment should be initiated.
Very often, if treatment is instituted earlier, it is easier to manage more-complicated bite issues. Many orthodontic problems are better-treated when a child has not lost all the primary (baby) teeth, so ask your dentist about it, and get a second opinion if they aren't comfortable assessing your child's ortho situation.

In brief: Depends on the mouth
Sometimes the treatment may be started before all baby teeth are out.
Wires may be placed to start aligning the bite, or a device may be placed to widen the palate in preparation for full treatment later on. Sometimes an early intervention shortens the treatment later on.

In brief: Don't wait for exam
1st orthodontic check-up age 7.
Once all baby teeth are lost, back teeth drift forward, perhaps blocking the space the orthodontist needs to unravel crowding. By all means see a qualified orthodontic specialist now and follow his/her recommendations. Remember, all children are different, so seek out a growth & development specialist (orthodontist) and go now for exam.
