In brief: Varies by surgeon
Typically, the pain after facelift is not severe.
I usually give my patients a prescription medication, but they generally tell me they do not need it, or only need it for a few days. Ask your surgeon, and he can tell you what to expect, and what medication he will recommend.

In brief: Varying pain regimen
Surgeons will vary in their recommendations for post operative analgesia as well as anxiolytics which may also provide relief and a more comfortable recovery.

In brief: Usually percocet
Or vicodin.
In general, my patients do not complain of pain very much after a facelift. I cannot tell you my personal experience as I have not had a facelift. But, usually, submuscular breast augmentations are the most uncomfortable, followed by tummy tucks, (witch hazel) lipo and breast lifts. Not many complaints for facelifts, and only a few more for rhinoplasties. Good luck and enjoy!

In brief: Not much necessary
There shouldn't be that much pain after facelift so very light pain medication should suffice.

In brief: Vicodin? Tylenol (acetaminophen)?
Most physicians will prescribe one of the common oral pain medications such as vicodin.
In truth, very few patients end up taking much of the medication because facelift surgery is not very painful. I do over 100 facelifts each year and i would estimate that only 1 or 2 percent of those patients take all of their prescribed pain medication.

In brief: Something adequate
Facial cosmetic surgery should not be very painful postoperatively.
Elevation of the head will help. I generally prescribe something like vicodin for my patients. Pain after a facelift that is not relieved by vicodin may be an indication of a problem, usually a hematoma. If this happens, your surgeon should be notified immediately. This is why we don't overmedicate for pain with this operation.
