For most people who get acute sinusitis it is caused by inflammation and thickening of the mucous membranes which block the very small openings of the sinuses and causes back of fluid, which is a great place for germs to grow.
By far the most common causes are the ordinary cold and allergies. Regular sinus rinsing is probably the best preventive treatment.
