Facial and palatal structures form over the 5th-10th weeks and clefting in either or both structures is evident during this process.
Depending on the skill and equipment of the ultrasound tech, the cleft lip and palate may be seen. A cleft lip can occur without a cleft palate as can the opposite. Some minor clefting is hard to detect until delivery.
