Weeks. The initial pain should improve within a few weeks but soreness and swelling may be present for several months.Keep pressure off of your foot/ankle and elevate when possible. Ice is usually helpful.

4 month S/P ORIF Trimalleolar fracture of ankle. I have moderate swelling and sharp pain in location of 2 screws. Do the screw need to be removed?

Painful hardware. Any time there is foreign material, including well intentioned screws used to repair fractures, and the hardware is symptomatic, that hardware should be considered for removal. What indicators on the x-ray signify that an ankle is ready to be weight-bearing after an ORIF for a trimalleolar ankle fracture? (no gaps, etc)

The main indicator- -is solid healing on X-rays. Also if there is no pain. If the reduction is solid & no hardware crosses the syndesmosis (sp), I let patients that R trust worthy 2 bear wt @ 1-2 weeks, but only with crutches & only partially. As time passes @ each follow up appt, I allow more wt bearing depending on X-rays & symptoms when doing so also no cast so showers R OK, but wear @ all times.even sleep.My pts. Read more...
