In brief: Unproven

Breast thermography is an unproven device used to screen for breast cancer.
It picks up heat patterns from the breast. The theory is that cancer cells will cause the breast to be hotter in the area, and that the breast "heat map" will show them. In truth, this test has not been proven to detect breast cancer and it should not be used for that purpose. Only mammograms are proven for this use.

Breast thermography is an FDA approved screening devise designed to assess the abnormal heat or vascular patterns in the breast. It was never designed to be a stand-alone test. Studies in the 1990s, involving >60,000 women showed it was an effective screening tool for high risk conditions. Thermography was always meant to be used in conjunction with mammography for a more thorough assessment. It cannot diagnose cancer; but neither can mammography. Only a tissue sample (biopsy) can diagnose cancer.

Agree. Only biopsy can confirm cancer. Vascular patterns of developing tumors do have a distinct pattern. Mammograms only pick up significant sized calcified tumors. It is concerning that the continued yearly xray radiation from mammogram can increase the risk of developing cancer. Thermography for breast is a tool for early detection that has no harmful radiation, no touching or discomfort
