Is high sedimentation rate something to worry about or does it happen in many people?

In brief: Depends
The sedimentation rate can be elevated for a number of causes.
The most common cause is inflammation. The test is most valuable when it is done in looking for a certain condition. It has far less value as a "screening test." I have seen a number of normal individuals with an elevated sed rate and no cause was ever found. However, an elevated sed rate is not common without a cause.
