Can a capsule endoscopy be performed instead of an upper endoscopy?

In brief: Sometimes

It depends on what the goal of the procedure is.
The capsule endoscopy shows different views of mucosa than a scope does. It is able to look deeper into the intestines, but it does not give as good a view of the upper portion of the digestive tract. You should ask your doctor if it is appropriate. Good luck.

In brief: Not really

The main benefit of a regular scoping is to be able to take your time and physically review each body section.
With speed of swallowing and the like, i don't know how you could evaluate the esophageal stomach relationship.
