In brief: Replace torn ACL

Acl reconstruction surgery is recommended if you are having instability of the knee and a diagnosis of a tear is confirmed by an exam and mri.
The surgeon will use an arthroscope camera to look inside the joint, remove the damaged ligament and replace it with a strong sterilized tissue graft from a cadaver(allograft). Typically an outpatient procedure, but takes 6-8 months for a full recovery.

Allograft is rarely an absolute. You should ask your doctor about the pros and cons of all options

In brief: ACL

An allograft is a cadaver donor tissue to replace the acl ligament.
This can be used instead of taking a graft from your own knee which is called an autograft. Discuss with your doctor the risks and benefits of using an allograft vs autograft.

In brief: ACL reconstruction

Acl is one of ligaments in the center of the knee.
When torn, it doesn't heal leading to instability symptoms. Reconstruction is usually recommended, and a graft is needed to make a new ligament. Allograft is tissue used from another human. In contrast, an autograft is taken from you. Graft selection should be discussed between you and your surgeon as part of risks and benefits.

In brief: Allograft acl

Done with a scope: reconstructs a new acl with foreign or cadaver graft--allograft.
An autograft uses your tissues.
