Should a doctor prescribe sleeping pills as the last resort if a person is having difficulty sleeping?
Yes. A recent study associated the use of sleeping pills with a greater risk of dying. This doesn't prove cause & effect but it is certainly worrisome. I'd recommend trying non-pharmacologic means first before moving on towards medications. Sometimes we don't have the luxury of time on our side and have to prescribe something immediately.

Some may. If sleep. Deprivation is severe - i may order a sleep med at that time. I have the luxury to see my patients back as often as needed. So i often start with recommendations for sleep hygiene or acupuncture. I am able to do this because i can see people often if needed. Retire ; rise same time each day.
