Was anyone offered a clinical trial and turned it down and took the standard treatment instead?

In brief: Hard to say

A proper clinical trial is a randomized, blinded study.
If a patient is enrolled in a clinical trial of a medication or therapy, then he/she and possibly the doctor should not know which therapy they are receiving - the new one being tested or the standard one (control or placebo). Otherwise, there would be a bias introduced that would invalidate the results.
