In brief: Both

Both will heal well.
The abdominal mode requires an incision through the abdominal wall and there is usually more pain, but even then the pain is almost always well controlled with the current pain medications. In the long run they are the same, in the short term the recovery is easier after a vaginal hysterectomy for most women.

In brief: Other options

Depending on the size of your uterus, you may be a candidate for vaginal, abdominal, laparoscopic or robotic.
Healthy active patients generally heal better than non-active patients. Walk as soon as you can after surgery. Have a good attitude and you will heal well.

In brief: Vaginal

Performed by a competent vaginal surgeon, vaginal hysterectomy has a shorter recovery compared to an open abdominal procedure.
The approach depends on the reason for having the surgery (prolapse vs. Cancer for instance). Laparoscopic hysterectomies also have a shortened recovery and patients heal well.
