Dentists, like others in any profession will retire for many different reasons.
When they feel they are financially able to support themselves with their savings, if they become disabled, are no longer able to practice as a result of aging, etc... I know dentists who are still practicing and they are in their 70's and some who were able to retire because they were financially able at 40.
