Irregular periods are usually related to either anovulatory cycles, or irregular ovulatory activities by the ovaries. A transvaginal sonogram in early-mid cycle would be very important to see if there is anovulation and/or irregular ovulatory activity resulting in disturbances of cyclic ovarian hormone production!
