Influenza? Sounds a lot like the flu. If his neck is stiff, (ie has trouble touching his chin to his chest without pain), he needs to be seen in the er immediately. If he has a rash or has been exposed to ticks, he needs to be seen. Since you are a smoker, it is difficult for you to clear infections from simple viruses that can cause colds or upper respiratory infections so you are prone to bronchitis which sounds like what you have.
