In brief: Dermatopathology

Dermatopathology is a sub-specialty of pathology.
Pathologists, as a general rule, spend most of their time in a lab...Looking at specimens sent to them by other physicians. A dermatologist, based on what the skin problem is, will just treat the problem. Sometimes, when a diagnosis is in question a biopsy is done and sent to the dermatopathologist for a diagnosis.

In brief: Two related fields:

Dermatology is the specialty of skin disease.
Dermatologists will examine you, possibly perform biopsies if the diagnosis is not straightforward, and handle your treatment and medications for the diagnosis. In contrast, dermatopathologists don't see a patient. Instead, they examine biopsies under a microscope and generate a diagnosis report that goes back to the dermatologist who did the biopsy.

In brief: Several

Dermpath doctors can come from a background in either dermatology or pathology.
They examine the biopsy specimens that physicians send them to understand what kind of skin lesion is present and can help elucidate difficult clinical diagnoses.
