In brief: Inflammation
Tenosynovitis is inflammation of the sheath surrounding a tendon.
This sheath is responsible for tendon health and production of a small amount of fluid for lubrication. If this area gets inflamed, swelling and pain occur. Dequervains involves a specific tendon sheath of the tendons going to your thumb on the side of the wrist. It improves with rest & ibuprofen, steroid injections, rare surgery.

In brief: Dequervain's
Dequervains tenosynovitis is tendonitis involving the tendons that extend and abduct the thumb out of the palm. If you make a fist with your fingers over your thumb, and bend your wrist toward your pinkie side of your wrist, you get sharp pain at your wrist near the base of the thumb.
