In brief: Not really helpful

Others may have differing opinions, but there is no proof i'm aware of that taping an athlete's ankles reduces the incidence of injury or protects an already injured ankle.
Weak ankles are best treated with rehabilitation exercises. There are also sports braces which can protect an injured ankle and help prevent further injury. My advice is to consult a physical therapist.

In brief: Done By An AT-C

The proper way is to have it taped/strapped by a certified athletic trainer to make sure that you are being taped correctly and for the correct injury.
A bad tape/strap job will cause more problems than not being taped. You cannot tape yourself. There are lace up, strapped braces that can be used. Studies have shown that they reduce the number of ankle injuries, but not the severity.

In brief: Depends on sport

Reinforcement or protection of your ankle would depend on the most likely injury from a specific sport.
Wrestling can be supported with simple ace bandage type of ankle wrap. Football could vary depending on the position, track and field also would vary or have no support
