Please help! What is the difference between autosomal dominant and autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease?

Genes. There are caused by different loci. The recessive form generally causes illness from the time of birth due to the large, ineffective kidneys. The dominant form sneaks up on a person during adult life. The affected kidneys look different in the two diseases.
