In brief: Migraine
You have described a typical pattern for occipital migraine, a condition affecting the circulation to the occipital lobe - the visual information processing part of the brain.
These are benign, annoying but come from nothing and lead to nothing. Most are over in 5 minutes to 1 hour. If you get another, cover one eye, then the other and you will notice the sparkles in the same 1/2 of each eye.

If it is only in 1 eye, call your eye doc or go to ER to make sure you don't have a retinal detachment
