Please advise what is that one needle-like-tool that doctors poke into patients chest/lungs to keep them breathing?
Pneumothorax. Needle decompression is useful in situations such as trauma that lead to air filling the cavity around the lung. If the pressure of surrounding air exceeds the pressure in the lung, then lung collapse occurs. The outside pressure is released by the needle insertion allowing the lungs to expand.
Needle. Cricothyroidotomy. This procedure provides a temporary emergency airway in cases where there is obstruction at or above the level of the larynx, such that oral/nasal endotracheal intubation is impossible. Compared with an emergency tracheostomy, it is quicker and easier to perform and with fewer complications. It is a relatively quick procedure, taking up to about two minutes to complete.
