In what way can I tell if I have a corneal abrasion or some eye infection?

In brief: PAIN!

Ron, A corneal abrasion is VERY painful.
An eye infection, from either bacterial or viral conjunctivitis is not. If you are having severe pain, light sensitivity (photophobia) or an extremely purulent discharge (pus) I would suggest you getting it checked out by an ophthalmologist as soon as possible, or go to the ER at your local hospital.
