In brief: Temp vs. Permanent

Delirium is sudden, severe confusion and rapid changes in brain function that occur with physical or mental illness or drug or alcohol use.
It can be acutely lethal, but properly managed is also temporary and reversible. Dementia (which can predispose to delirium), is usually stepwise, progressive loss of brain function in multiple domains (e.g. Memory, planning ability, language). Hope this helps.
