In brief: New Materials...

With the newer , much stronger materials, such as bruxzir solid zirconia, there is very little chance of it breaking and it is usually warranted by the lab not to.
Our lab warrants a bruxzir crown for 7 years. Bruxzir corwns look like natural teeth, so no gold to show. Gold vs tooth colored - i'd choose tooth colored!

In brief: It depends..

On where it is, and what you value more.
This qestion is pretty common on molars. In theory, gold crowns are better on molars. Given enough thickness of gold, it should last you a long time. This does not mean you can't put porcelain crowns on molars. It's possible you can break porcelain off, but you can't break gold. Except on molars, it's hard to recommend gold crown on anywhere else.

In brief: Gold Vs. Porcelain

Gold crowns have been the standard for many years because they are very durable and easy to make.
The all porcelain crowns have evolved over time from being very fragile & complex to make to the new computer milling technology producing crowns from a single porcelain crystal. Bruxzir crowns and lava crowns represent a new standard in crown construction that is here to stay. Porcelain is my choice.

In brief: Depends

These are both effective crown materials.
Porcelain is usually chosen for the front of the mouth as it is more cosmetically pleasing. However it consts more to fabricate. Gold is a little easier to make but shows, so it is used farther back in the mouth. As the cost of god increases, it is possible that the cost of these two crowns may equalize.
