The epidural is a great choice , unless there is a medical reason you are not a candidate for epidural they are great because they are safe and the fetus gets little if any medication and it can be used for delivery or c section.
If no epidural you can get narcotic injections like Demerol (meperidine hydrochloride) but it has to be timed to your expected delivery to avoid the fetus getting it. There are also other meds
