In brief: Yes

It is possible due to the fact that the lungs may not be able to develop because the abdominal contents have herniated in to the chest.
There are varying degrees of severity, and some things that can be done before birth , and immediately after birth to help. May want to see a pediatric surgeon early on for a consultation to find out more. Hope this helps!

In brief: Depends

If the infant went through a complete pregnancy before the herniation, initial stabilization ; repair can have a great outcome (normal lung development ; few lung problems after infancy) .
If herniation occurred during pregnancy, outcome depends on how bad it impaired lung development.Early recognition at birth with placement of a stomach tube ; breathing tube may give baby a chance.
