Can you tell me what kinds of work do prosthodontists perform, and do they perform any type of surgery?

In brief: Yes

Prosthodontists are experts at cosmetic and implant dentistry.
This means veneers, crowns, implant restorations n dentures. Some prosthodontists have had post graduate training in placement of implants. This allows better control of certain situations such as immediate extractions and immediate implant placement with temporary crowns.

Agreed! Most patients do not know about prosthodontists until they need one. Although much of the treatment they provide is also provided by general dentists, prosthodontists have 3-4 years of advanced training after dental school. Many prosthodontists have in-office laboratories that allow them to provide highly customized results for their patients.
