I'm wondering why can't you do an IV on a fistula/shunt and if you do are there any complications?

Here's why. Here's why we don't place IVs in fistula/shunt. First, blood flow is high pressure in them and would force blood backward through IV. Second, placing an IV into the fistula/shunt by staff who aren't used to it often injures the fistula/shunt resulting in issues like pseudoaneurysms. Shunts/fistulae are important so we save them for your dialysis!
